12:00 pm – Herd goats back to Steamer Landing Park
12:45 – 3:00 pm – Transhumance Celebration – Bring your a picnic and enjoy live music by Burnside

Transhumance Festival - June 12th 2021
WHEREAS, the Transhumance Festival is an annual celebration dedicated to reconnecting people to the land, celebrating grassland culture, reintroducing the age-old practice of Transhumance – the tradition of moving livestock from one grazing ground to another in a seasonal cycle; and
WHEREAS, the Transhumance festival intends to nourish and renew our relationship and commitment to land, animals, soil biodiversity, water, climate and each other, and
WHEREAS the city of Petaluma advocates for the right to clean air, water, soil, sustainable sources of energy and healthy, locally grown food for all it resident; and
WHEREAS, the city of Petaluma has long been committed to protecting, preserving, and restoring the environment, and acknowledges that the existing laws and cultural framework have fallen short in protecting our natural resources from degradation; and
WHEREAS, climate change and rising sea levels threaten to further endanger the natural world and our place in it. The City Council therefore enacted Ordinance 2689 intending to elevate climate issues to the highest priority in its goal-setting process; and
WHEREAS, the city of Petaluma the city of Petaluma recognizes the importance of soil biodiversity and recognizes the cultural services and functions of healthy soil has a direct relation to the health of its community and municipality; and
WHEREAS, the city of Petaluma further seeks to recognize soil and the natural world as a living entity with the right to exist, persist, maintain and regenerate its vital cycles, structures, functions and their process in evolution; and
WHEREAS, the history and economy of city of Petaluma is rooted in Agriculture, which will play a significant role in how Petaluma will protect its natural environment, soil biodiversity and prepare for climate change; and
WHEREAS, the third annual Transhumance Festival is a day of celebration for the people of Petaluma and is one way they can engage with their environment to work towards revitalizing the biotic community, and nurture the human-soil relationship.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that I, Teresa Barrett, Mayor of Petaluma, along with members of the Petaluma City Council, recognize the act of Transhumance and supports its residents relationship and right to care for healthy and biodiverse soil.
